The whistling kettle that doesn’t

I buy hardly any kind of product these days without consulting Amazon reviews first. This latest experience is a reminder of why. If I had read these reviews first, I would have been forewarned.

Quite simply, the kettle does not whistle. The box says, “Strong, loud whistle” but the kettle itself remains silent. The cap over the spout has a hole in it, with nothing across it or over it that might induce a whistle. Perhaps it is a mute whistle, for use at tea parties in Carthusian monasteries.

I have a half-century of experience with tea kettles and have known them lose their whistle, have a poor whistle or even too loud a whistle, but this is the first I have seen that was born utterly whistleless.

I’ll now look for another kettle and yes, I will read the reviews first.

But I wanted one that WHISTLES!

It’s beautiful and I love the look of it. But I specifically spent the extra money so that I would have a GOOD tea kettle that whistles. It sputters, it spits, it hisses (a little, if the water is really rolling), but it doesn’t whistle. I read the reviews and knew this was a possibility; I had just hoped mine would be different. It wasn’t.

Love it

Since I’ve taken up tea drinking again and my kids love hot cocoa in winter, I decided to invest in a nicer kettle. I chose this one because it had so many good reviews and I’m glad I did. I love the color and shape, it is a breeze to clean and fill, and it’s easy to pour. I haven’t had any trouble with spilling, and I do like the silicone around the handle – although I wish they made the silicone cover the entire handle instead of just middle.
Overall, I’d buy it again.

Flimsy

My roommate had a splatter guard with a long handle. I didn’t like the long handle so I got this. The screen is quite flimsy and after one use had tears along the edge. That makes me not particularly happy. The other model I’ve had experience with had no give on the screen portion. More like a highly perforated thin but sturdy metal plate whereas this is just like window screen wrapped with a rim and a handle tossed on. I don’t expect it to last long. But it does keep the grease in and allows the steam out.

How much can one say about a splatter cover?

Actually, I like this so much better than those with that long handle sticking out the side. However, this one seems like it might be a little flimsy around the outside edge. I still prefer it to the old kind with the handle. It is big so covers my biggest frying pans.

Stickers! Really?

The dishes arrived fine. Packaging was good and secure. But each dish had a big sticker on the inside bottom. Why? If you MUST put a logo sticker on the product, please use an adhesive that is easy to remove. I spent an hour with a bottle of goo-gone removing the left-over adhesive. There was no need for the sticker – there logo is already stamped on the underside. The product is what I expected but these stickers infuriated me.

I’m leaving this same review for the 8-ounce side that I also purchased (and wanted to throw across the room)

Problem Solved…

Looks like they solved the problem of breakage in shipping. Each of the six ramekins was wrapped separately in bubble wrap and the six were shipped in a separate box from the rest of my order. I’m pleased with the quality of the product and would buy more if I needed them.

We ordered the skillets on 10/31/2011, so haven’t had time to use them very much. They seem well made and have the name “KitchenAid” which we have found to be dependable. We consider them a good buy.

Fine standard chef at very reasonable price

The Forschner 40520 was rated as “best overall” in Cooks magazine in Fall 2004. Pretty good report card from “the” chefs magazine. It took top honors over several high end ($80 -$100+) Wusthofs and Henckel models. While they didn’t claim that the Forschner was better at any one specific task or that the craftsmanship can stand up to the others (its blade is cut from a blank ribbon of steel, instead of a hand-forged one piece) they did say that its lighter weight was preferred by some of their testers and that it handled the basics just as well as more expensive models. I just took delivery of mine last week and I am putting it to the test. I can say that it arrives razor sharp…nice… and that it’s fairly well balanced. The handle is made of a grippy composite that allows you to securely hold firm if wet or in akward positions. The handle is a little longer than others I’ve owned, maybe too long for small hands, but it is contoured so you can move up towards the blade for better control. The blade does have a nice rocked contour, which makes chopping & dicing easier. I’ve grown to prefer ligher weight blades and you don’t sacrifice much when it’s this sharp. Overall I would say that for the price, this is a great chef knife..time will tell if any problems develop. Definitely doesn’t have the same craftsmenship or allure of one of the high end Germans, but if your looking for a highly functional, lightweight, standard chef, it’s hard to go wrong here.

Not bad, but the tip broke off

I liked the knife at first but after only a few months of light use, about 1/4″ of the tip seems to have broken off. This doesn’t surprise me, as the blade is thin compared to the better knives.

Update on this review: I was beyond the Amazon 30-day return period, but Victorinox was more than happy to replace it, emphasizing that all their products have a lifetime guarantee.

Excellent Knife and NOT high-priced!

This knife is such a value. I have always had a hard time accepting the high-prices on Wuesthoff or Henckel knives because I never felt the VALUE was worth it. Boy am I glad I held out for the Victorinox knife! This knife, also known as Forschner, is consistently sharp. Just a few swipes of the sharpening steel and its good as new again. I use this knife and a 6″ every day. The handles are comfortable and do not get slippery when wet. They are practically the only knives I use. I wash and wipe dry after each use (NEVER put in the dishwasher). I think you’ll be as pleased as I if you try this knife.
